Realising our research goals requires first reviewing the material, created between 1907 and the 1960s, and then restoring the work itself. A fire in 1989 damaged around 10,000 glass and gelatin nega tives. The photographs were severely affected by smoke, ash and water, and by mould caused by improper storage. Through a non-monetary advisory partnership with the Austrian National Library, we established contact with the Institute for Paper Restoration. After careful budgeting and restoration, the negatives are digitised and made available to the public via a website.
In an interview, restorer Andreas Gruber told us more about how the restoration unfolds, from the first review through to digitisation. Dieses können sie hier lesen.
