Art and Adventure – Visual Arts Education
Much can be replaced by AI, but human creativity cannot.
Since 2024, the Karl Max Kessler Archive has hosted an annual primary school project with the 4th grade of the Riezlern primary school. For this purpose, we invite an international artist to the Kleinwalsertal, who provides the children with insights into contemporary artistic practice and develops a work of art together with them.
The one-week workshop is preceded by an introduction to art and creative thinking by Mathias Kessler and is accompanied by interdisciplinary support in the classroom. In an era where new technologies and Artificial Intelligence are transforming our daily lives, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-based learning are becoming increasingly important.
Through artistic work, playful exploration, and the discovery of nature and materials, the children acquire technical skills and social competencies while experiencing the joy of creation. Complementing this, the Karl Max Kessler Archive offers one-day workshops to sustainably strengthen the creativity of the next generation.

"Nature, Art & Adventure": A direct and catchy translation of Natur, Kunst & Abenteuer.
Freiraum "Student and holiday childcare after school and during vacation.
As part of the holiday program, Mathias Kessler organized an art and adventure day together with the Freiraum team in Riezlern.
The Karl Max Kessler Archive sees itself as a living memory of the Kleinwalsertal. It not only preserves the historical photographs of Karl Max Kessler but also uses them to develop new impulses for the present and the future. In collaboration with artists, schools, and local partners, annual projects are created that connect history, nature, and community.
Whether through exhibitions, workshops, or artistic interventions – each project builds a bridge between the past and the present, making visible how closely cultural heritage, landscape, and the creative shaping of the future are intertwined.

With his artistic focus on movement, mechanics, and physical force, he provides an inspiring foundation for connecting art with playful learning.
A "spaceship" was produced in Mathias Kessler's studio in extreme cold, but with an equally great amount of enthusiasm from the children.

The children designed the invitation cards themselves, gave presentations, organized a performance, and sang to celebrate the landing of the spaceship together with the village community.
Hubert Dobler – künstlerische Arbeit
Dobler enjoys walking back and forth between the aisles of hardware stores, finding his inspiration there.
The keyword is kinetic art: machines and devices move or are stacked in such a way that they can no longer fulfill their original function.
Motorcycles drive in circles or are throttled. As an individual, Dobler is not averse to this motorized glory of freedom, but as an artist, he takes a critical look at the climate-destroying impact of fossil fuels.

These two concrete mixers, welded onto one another, are rendered incapable of contributing to the soil sealing that destroys the natural state of the ground for all eternity.
2011 hat er in Brooklyn / New York ein Seifenkistenrennen veranstaltet. Die Seifenkisten wurden vorzugsweise aus Fundstücken in einem workshop gebaut. Bewertet wurden Geschwindigkeit, Design und Originalität.
2025 wurde das Projekt in Feldkirch erneut mit Kindern und Jugendlichen umgesetzt.
In seinen Projekten sowie in seiner pädagogischen Praxis erforscht er kontinuierlich die Verbindung von körperlicher Dynamik und künstlerischem Ausdruck.
Hubert Dobler – Biografie
Hubert Dobler (Jg 1966), geboren in Vorarlberg, lebt und arbeitet in New York und Vorarlberg.
Nach seinem Abschluss der HTL in Rankweil hat als Bautechniker gearbeitet, bevor er 1989-91 an der Technischen Universität in Wien Architektur studierte. Von 1992 – 95 Studium an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien.

Mathias Kessler -Verkehrte Welten (März und Juni 2024)
Das erste Kunstprojekt mit der 4. Klasse Volksschule in Riezlern wurde im Frühjahr 2024 auf Initiative der damaligen Volksschuldirektorin Sabine Rotter und des Karl Max. Kessler Archivs umgesetzt.
Die Kunstinitiative soll die künstlerische Kreativität und die Verbundenheit mit der Natur fördern.
Eine einführende Präsentation informiert Pädagog:innen und Eltern über die Vision dieses Projekts. Mathias Kessler taucht nicht nur in allgemeine Konzepte von Kunstprojekten mit Kindern ein, sondern präsentiert auch bedeutende Beispiele wie den berühmten Künstler Keith Haring, Erwin Wurm ua..
Der kreative Teil des ersten Projekts beginnt mit der Verteilung von Einwegkameras an die Schüler:innen. Gemeinsam begeben sie sich auf einen Ausflug durch die idyllische Landschaft des Kleinwalsertals. Während dieses Field-Trips werden den Kindern die Grundlagen der Fotografie vermittelt und es wird ihnen Raum für ihre eigene Experimentierfreude gegeben. Der Fokus liegt darauf, die Welt um sie herum aus neuen Perspektiven zu erfassen und ihre individuelle Sichtweise einzufangen.
Der nächste Schritt war die Entwicklung der Filme. Der Charme von Einwegkameras liegt oft in der Überraschung, da die Kinder ihre Aufnahmen erst dann sehen, wenn die Filme entwickelt sind.
Die entstandenen Fotografien wurden digitalisiert, um anschließend mit anderen Materialien ein Wandbild zu kreieren. Entstanden sind Collagen aus Fotos und Zeitungsausschnitten, die Realität und Fantasie miteinander verschränken. Die Kinder haben es „verkehrte Welten“ genannt.

Das gemeinsame Arbeiten mit dem Mitschülerinnen und Mitschülern gefällt mir sehr gut.
Gemeinsam ein Projekt zu gestalten ist klasse.

Dieses partizipative Kunstprojekt ist als Kunstvermittlung an die jüngsten Einwohner:innen gedacht, sowie als Möglichkeit des Zusammentreffens aller Einwohner:innen und Besucher:innen durch die offizielle Präsentation des Ergebnisses im Dorf.

Mathias Kessler – Biografie
Mathias Kessler (*1968, Österreich) lebt und arbeitet im Kleinwalsertal, Vorarlberg, und in New York. In seiner künstlerischen Praxis hinterfragt er den Begriff von Natur und dessen kulturelle Konstruktion. Durch Bezüge auf Kunstgeschichte, Philosophie und ökologische Diskurse verbindet er Malerei, Installation, Land Art und digitale Verfahren. Kessler inszeniert natürliche Prozesse als fragile, oft widersprüchliche Bilder, in denen sich Ästhetik, Ideologie und Erfahrung überlagern. Seine Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen kritischer Reflexion, visueller Kraft und subtiler Ironie.
