Though it was originated by Mark Twain, the expression is used in popular culture to evoke broader notions of opportunity in the American West, where settlers ventured westward in hopes of striking it rich.

In a similar but more metaphoric light, the idea that the hills might contain gold, or even be gold, infers that we can see a natural space as idyllic, scenic, rejuvenating, wild, teaming with life, and simultaneously profitable and commodifiable all within the same gaze. This work, titled „There’s Gold In Them Thar Hills,“ explores how we assign varying values to natural spaces, values that the landscapes themselves do not voluntarily create.

The image used for the project is a uniquely constructed image from the Karl Max Kessler archive taken in the first part of the 20th century. It portrays a picturesque snowy landscape, with huts blanketed in a caricaturesque amount of snow and a collaged tree bending from the weight of the excessive snow. This image represents an exaggerated vision of abundance that contrasts with the environments we encounter today, affected by climate change and other human impacts. It highlights how both the image and its perception are shaped equally by cultural and physical constructs (e.g. humans living in balance with a pure nature, albeit with the aid of snow machines and terraformed landscapes).

The main billboard perched atop the ski slope implores passersby to see themselves within the natural spaces of the Kleinwalsertal which contain aesthetic, biological, and economic value which we all share responsibility for. Additionally, a 1:1 scale replica of the golden billboard has been cut into 32 pieces and scattered across the Kleinwalsertal valley, mimicking the distribution of currency. The individual pieces distributed at commercial venues across the valley are also reminders that the natural spaces of the Kleinwalsertal simultaneously hold disparate but not incompatible forms of value actively formed by residents and visitors together.

    <div class="elementor-element elementor-element-500886d elementor-widget
